He had just lost his mother to illness, his home to fire. His uncle was putting him through school -- and putting him to work. His chores included begging neighbors daily for pigswill, and tending to the hogs. Circumstances in childhood, like the jeers of classmates, affected the boy, And created a resolve that affects and benefits the lives of many poor children today.
