The Hon Tanya Plibersek MP, Federal Minister for Housing, discusses housing affordability at The Australian National University on 25 May 2010.

The national crisis in affordable accommodation has hit low income earners hard in Canberra. Even where new public service graduates, students, young families and the unemployed have been able to find accommodation they often can't afford the rents on offer. Demand for public housing and student accommodation far outstrips supply.

What is being done by government about rental affordability, and what can we do better? Where is new investment needed?

The Federal Minister for Housing, The Hon Tanya Plibersek addressed these questions at a special lunchtime lecture and Q&A hosted by the Australian Fabians and the ANU Students' Association.

  • first home buyers grant was a major factor in in house prices going up . statistics tell us that for every $1000 of grant given to home buyers the real house prises rose by $9000 . government should think about dropping stamp duties and land taxes for first home buyers rather then just handing out cash to whomever wants to buy a new house. government is at fault here .

  • and getting services into these suburbs inadvertantly raise the prices of the land to begin with, along with increasing the taxes and rates for supply of hospitals, schools, community centres etc, the only way to impact housing affordability properly is with urban infill and higher densities around exiting core services, thereby increasing land availability around areas with existing private and public infrastructure. Saving $20k on land is lost if you have to use the car daily & daycare kids.

  • Left wing socialists...they forget it is government who create housing un-affordability by refusing to unlock cheap land on the city fringes. As Milton Friedman once said, 'if you put government in charge of the Sahara Desert, in five years there would be a shortage of sand'.

  • The end of my comment should read inflating house prices beyond the reach of generations x y and z.These generations have been turned into debt slaves by the baby boomers and the reserve bank with all of this easy money.Shame on you.

  • Keep dreaming

  • So there is a land shortage in Australia is there? There is perhaps unbeknown to you a snow and ice shortage at the south pole making the construction of igloos there very expensive,on account of snow and ice banking by greedy and corrupt officials. So it is with land banking in Australia.Australia the lucky country ,infested with greedy land whores spivs and pimps, guttersnipe land sharks and parasites on the savers of the world.Inflating house prices beyond the reach of generation x
