This is true, the ranking battle doesn't start at the quarter final stage, Ryan would've won his set of preliminaries to make it that far. I'm sure everyone's aware of the standard of players Gamers Vision Arcade keeps, so credit where credit is due.

you cant help it if q can do 50%+ combos. 1 early mistake and you can lose the round.

I think there is definitely some truth to what you're saying.  However, as Shend and Carpeto pointed out, the fact that he made top 8 is not to be discounted either. And, for the record, Nonsense has one of the better Q's in Japan, so he's not an "unknown."
