Luminary bags (in honor of or in memory of those who have had cancer) at the Berrien County Relay for Life 2006. This team had a particularly cool set-up with a motorized turning display.
Relay for Life is a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. This particular event was a 24 hour event with over 100 teams of people who spent months fundraising for the American Cancer Society. These fundraisers include fun events or asking for donations or whatever the team wants to do.
At the actual event, there are activities and games and food - all profits going to Relay for Life (the American Cancer Society). There are also events/ceremonies throughout the day including the Luminaria ceremony at night, after which there is a silent walk around the grounds after the luminaries are lit. Luminaries are bags people have bought with a donation of $10 or more to recognize a loved one. After that silent lap, the luminaries stay lit all night, but people and teams go back to spending time together, sleeping in tents or occupying themselves for the night. One team member from each team is walking on the track at all times, so things do not die down at night. All this to say that although there are solemn moments during the Relay weekend, it is also a wonderful time for those who have fought and those who have lost to come together for support and a common goal. We do mourn the lost, but we also celebrate those who have survived and we do have fun together.
This video was not taken during the silent lap after the Luminaria Ceremony, but later in the night.

Yes, it was a cool display, but what was with the laughing and jovial voices in the background??? Unless all of these luminaria were celebrating survivors, it was inappropriate.
