Metallica was the biggest inspiration for guitar when I started playing, and I used to love Kirk. But now that I've been playing for 10 years, I appreciate James' guitar playing much more! James has very well articulated picking, and his monster tone is responsible for that classic Metallica sound. He also wrote most of their music. As far as soloing goes, Friedman has an incredible amount of finesse and creativity. His unique style and tone will be remembered for generations to come.

To culikhan: That is the worst load of crap i have ever heard. The term virtuoso is used too lightly now adays. Rusty Cooley is a great guitarist, he is a technical machine. He makes the impossible possible and with little hands no doubt. However to compare him even technique wise much less composition wise...hahah He fails in comparison to the greats true MASTERS such as Liszt and Paganini. They were virtuosos. He is a lick player thats it. Not genious not a performer not a virtuoso.

virtuosity is not always appropriate. it has its place but should never be confused with rock n' roll. rock is american folk music. Rusty Cooley is essentially a post modern violin virtuoso & about as entertaining, depending on your tastes. He is a great classical musician. rock musicians are more like minstrels, playing popular folk music that's all part of an image and a show. musicians especially should know the difference and respect one another. both are important and valid to the canon.
