British Honduras was the former name of what is now the independent nation of Belize, when it was still a British colony.

First colonised by Spaniards in the seventeenth century, the territory on the east coast of Central America, south of Mexico, became a British crown colony from 1862 until 1964, when it became self-governing. Belize became fully independent from the United Kingdom in 1981. Belize was the last continental possession of the United Kingdom in the Americas.

The Treaty of Versailles (1783) between Britain and Spain, gave the British rights to cut logwood between the Hondo and Belize rivers. In 1862, the Settlement of Belize in the Bay of Honduras was declared a British colony called British Honduras, and the crown's representative was elevated to a lieutenant governor, subordinate to the governor of Jamaica.

  • During the Belize Emergency of 1972 where the Guatemalan forces lined the border to invade. the British reaction was quick and decisive. they deployed three SA.330 Pumas of the No.33 Squadron to the Belize airport, while six Hawker Siddeley Harrier GR.Mk.1A "jump jets" of the No.1 Squadron RAF were deployed along with war ships. HMS Ark Royal (aircraft carrier) was sent by Florida in response as well. The troops, Attack helicopter and Harriers were withdrawn in 1994.

  • Actually Belize has a treaty that was signed after independence saying if the country is ever invaded the UK will come back to defend the nation. This treaty alone is holding off Guatemala from invading (Guatemala still claims Belize). But tensions are high at present date and the president of Guatemala is threatening to use force and take over. so we will see if the UK holds up to this treaty...

  • If this country gets invaded by foreign powers now, they are ALONE!No British protection! I can't understand all this Independance stuff.......better off with the British flag, because if you get invaded, the British and Americans become involved!

  • goddamn white european illegals came and stole more than just our jobs, you took our land, religions, languages, cultures, GOD DAMN THE QUEEN
