While it's not the best one out there, it's still very effective. People fall for this all the time. Half of magic is the idea that people want to believe it. Penn and Teller do a great skit talking about that very concept. Look it up, it's called "why magic works."

EZ. Trick is already set up. The 7 of spades is in the wallet before the trick starts. When he cuts the deck he puts the bottom stack on top. Meaning that the 7 of spades was on the bottom of the deck to begin with. Maybe if somebody is intoxicated they will fall for it.
