What language should be used to teach Spanish-speaking students? Thats the question the Mendota Township High School Board wrestled with last night. The schools Terry Busard briefed board members on the proposed bilingual educational program telling them the goal next year is to give students in excess of 50-percent of their course work in their native language, should they want it. She explains that students typically score better when they learn math and science skills in Spanish, noting that when the skills are presented in English, students have to have a firm grasp on the language to digest their lessons. Superintendent Jeff Prusator says the tentative plan will go into effect next year and may not resemble the plan outlined last night.
