I have theorized that one of the first things they do when they initially start to suck you in and have a bit of info on you during auditing they either run a credit check or are very good at sizing you up financially.
Probably not true but it makes sense to me.

The future will eventually become brighter for Tom in the series but not until he goes through more muck. It builds character he so desperately needs.
