Praekelt Foundation believes that mobile technology is reshaping the future of the African continent, and that we have a chance to guide that change, using this powerful new tool to improve the lives of people living in poverty and empowering them to take charge of their own wellbeing. We've created this video to spread the word, and we hope it helps us recruit more advocates for the power of mobile technology. The future starts here!

Since this video was made, African mobile penetration has grown again, to 650 Billion subscribers, more than the USA & Europe, only a smidge behind Asia. Imagine a population of mobile-equipped, tech-savvy, internet-linked kids (50% of them under 20 years old) who are ready to work & ready to buy product... This economy is ready for takeoff! China & India, move over & make way; like Shakira said: It's Time For Africa!

I wonder, why are mobile phones so inexpensive and easily available in potential markets such as Africa, but text books, school uniforms and transportation are expensive. If corporates subsidized these things instead of a cell phone, am sure a lot more citizens in poor nations will have all round education, development and exposure than what can be procured or learnt through mobile phones.

Brilliantly informative. That little word, "market", though, still shows how possibly polluted the motives for investment in Africa could be, if, (a BIG IF), entrepreneurial priorities are surrendered for the benefit of unnecessarily enlarging the moguls' purses.

Mobile tech has allowed many African nations to skip expensive, high maintenance land lines. Because of this, Africa may well become a mobile data/internet innovation hot spot. Finding ways of increasing efficiency, coverage, value for money, usability of mobile internet networks. Some charities / social enterprises are creating excellent, innovative solutions to providing broadband access to isolated communities, for example, through the use of home made line of sight aerials.
