Los Angeles (MSN.com) - The Gap Band bassist Robert Wilson has died after suffering a heart attack at the age of 53.

Wilson's body was found by his adult son at his home in Los Angeles on Sunday after his family became concerned when they were unable to contact him, according to his publicist and manager, Don Jackson.

The bassist formed The Gap Band with his older brothers Ronnie and Charlie Wilson in 1967, when he was just a teenager, in their hometown of Tulsa, Okla.

They scored hits in the late 1970s and '80s with singles such as "Yearning for Your Love," "Early in the Morning" and "You Dropped a Bomb on Me," and Wilson's musical prowess earned him the nickname the "Godfather of Bass Guitar."

His death comes just two weeks before he was due to headline the Timeless Music Festival event in Tulsa, which will now be turned into a memorial concert for the late star.
