Contrary to a popular belief, this is not a gypsy song. this is an old Russian romance, Dark Eyes. The lyrics were written by an Ukrainian poet Evgeni Grebenka and published on January 17 1843 in a popular newspaper in Russia. In 1884 a Russian composer of German origin Florian Hermann composed the melody, Valse Hommage. Evgeni Grebenka has written many romances which later on became "gipsy" songs simply because they were popular among Russian gypsies. Thanks for posting
