ROUND TH' HORN!

The second verse translates:

I've roamed the high seas over
In many a good tall packet,
But this was the toughest rounding o' the Horn;
She was a hungry blighter
A proper sailors' workhouse,
Enough to make one wish he'd ne'er been born...

Well, I've not sailed round the Horn, but this has been a rather 'epic' tour. This marks the last song that I must have officially learned to say I learned and recorded all of the songs in Stan Hugill's _Shanties from the Seven Seas_ (complete version). Hoorah! Well, I have one more that was learned long ago just not officially posted before I can say this YouTube phase of the project is done...a technicality. And I will probably record a couple more which are just mentioned in passing in the book.

It's the third of 3 Welsh language chanties in the book. Please forgive my tendency to go into a Swedish pronunciation, and to lag slightly while remembering the "strange" (to me) words.

This version supposedly originates with an "old retired sea captain," whose singing was taken down by a David Thomas of Bangor, who in turn gave it to Stan Hugill. Thomas claimed in addition that the song was composed by Capt. Richard Pritchard of Amlwch.

Since Hugill brought this song to light, as it were, there have been a few renditions I guess, though I have not yet heard any in chanty style. In old timey or country style, one recording is by The Hennessys from as early as 1970, and another from the 1980s is by Dafyyd Iwan. Here are samples:
