Born in Battersea, south London, Margaret Tarrant was the daughter of landscape painter Percy Tarrant. A student at Heatherley's School of Art, she followed in her father's career as a book illustrator. At the age of 20 she illustrated Kingsley's The Water Babies, and more than a dozen other books within the next four years. In addition to books, Tarrant illustrated silhouette designs, calendars and postcards were extremely popular.
