Senate Amendment 1447 adds a fifth clause to section 1244 of the Federal Switchblade Act that exempts 'a knife that contains a spring, detent, or other mechanism designed to create a bias toward closure of the blade and that requires exertion applied to the blade by hand, wrist or arm to overcome the bias toward closure to assist in opening the knife.'
Spring Assist Knives are 100% Legal
California Penal Code Compliant - Bill SB 274
Legal in all 50 States To Own
But Remember That Local County & City Laws Can Be Harsher than the State Statues & Local Laws Take Precedence. So if you have questions about knives then phone your local police department and ask them about the knife laws that are applicable to you. Assisted Knives are completely legal to own but your local laws might restrict them from being carried into public or might have concealment or non-concealment laws.

U.S. Customs & Border Protection (CBP) has proposed revoking earlier rulings that assisted opening knives are not switchblades. The proposed new rule would not only outlaw assisted opening knives, its broad definition of a switchblade would also include one-handed opening knives and could be easily interpreted to cover most other pocket knives, even simple old-fashioned slip-joints.
Note that CBP's interpretation of the Federal Switchblade Act forms the basis for national, state and even local law and judicial rulings in many cases. This ruling by CBP is NOT limited to just imports. This WILL affect virtually everyone who carries a pocket knife, no matter the type!
The U.S. Government is after your Pocket Knives! In a sneak attack, U.S. Customs has proposed revoking earlier rulings that assisted opening knives are not switchblades. The proposal would not only outlaw assisted opening knives, its overly broad new definition of a switchblade would also include all one-handed opening knives and most other pocket knives!
U.S. Customs & Border Protection (CBP) just a bit over two weeks ago on May 21st proposed revoking earlier rulings that assisted opening knives are not switchblades. The proposed new rule would not only outlaw assisted opening knives, its new broad definition of a switchblade would also include one-handed opening knives and could be easily interpreted to cover most other pocket knives, even simple old-fashioned slip-joints. At this point, one-hand opening and assisted opening knives are 80% of U.S. knife sales (per AKTI industry sources). For most knife companies, they represent all or the majority of their product lines. These are the knives Americans take with them to work and to play everyday.

when will people learn that criminals are criminals and honest people are honest people. why should they lump us all into one category and treat us as criminals. INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY, NOT GUILTY UNTIL PROVEN INNOCENT. if you take knives away then people will kill eachother with wrenches and piano wire, it is the intent of committing the crime that is the problem. if america was really free people wouldn't feel they have to resort to violence because they are so deprived of freedom

@prometheus19799791 Valid point, glad to see some people still have brains out there and use it. The behavior is society and there needs to be punishment that fits the crime so others realize cause and effect and don't commit acts that are criminal. The entire system is wrong and corrupt, they rehabilitate the criminal after they have committed crimes and the victims get nothing. So the rape victim gets nothing but the criminal gets rehabilitated? People need to see the real issues.
