BEIJING - A 24-year-old Montreal man arrested Saturday during a pro-Tibet protest at the Beijing Olympic Games was immediately deported to Hong Kong and is expected to return to Montreal today or tomorrow, his friends said Saturday.
He and four other members of the worldwide Students for a Free Tibet were arrested in Tiananmen Square shortly after they began their protest. Schwartz's role was as narrator in a street skit that saw the other four - three Americans and one German national - wrap themselves in Tibetan flags and stage what they called a "die-in."
Chinese onlookers threw water bottles at them in contempt, according to eyewitness reports.
Dermod Travis, the Montreal-based executive director of the Canada Tibet Committee, said he wasn't surprised to wake Saturday to learn Schwartz had been arrested.
"He's completely committed to the cause (of Tibetan independence),"
