The original bungee jump, the naghol, in southern Pentecost Island in the tiny Republic of Vanuatu. This ritual jump traditionally takes place every year between April and May.
Men tie their legs to vines and jump from a 15 to 30 meter tower constructed specifically for this event. The goal for these men are to touch their hair on the soil without smashing their heads on the ground. The jump ensures a bountiful yam harvest.
I was present for a naghol exhibition on June 23, 2006 on my trip to Vanuatu for kava.
