Young Minds Academy (YMA), a youth leadership and development program of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation, Inc. (RAFI), is experiential in approach in a semi-structured learning environment. YMA is a scholarship using experiential education and problem-based learning approaches. The scholars will be exposed to real issues and concerns of our society anchored on the theme for the year. This will enable them to formulate possible solutions through a project proposal. The scholars will also undergo a series of competence and character development training. These learning sessions form part of the programs curriculum.

Each year, the academy anchors its program and modules to a specific theme. This will serve as the foundation for the annual objectives, criteria and guidelines, module and program design and strategies. The academy will define and adopt the annual themes.

YMA started in October of 2006 with Environment and Public Health as themes for the first and second seasons, respectively. For the third and current season, the theme is on Education.

The regular YMA program is now in its third season, with 2 batches of YMA graduates. The regular program runs for eight months since the learning sessions are done on weekends and holidays. With this current set-up, most, if not all, of the YMA scholars are residents of or are working or studying in Cebu. This is in consideration of time and the cost of travel of participants. In order to make the opportunity available to more young people, there is a need, therefore, to bring the program outside Cebu.

This Summer 2009, a project was developed that aims to conduct a Young Minds Academy - Summer Edition to train and develop young leaders from Region VIII. All modules and learning sessions shall be conducted successively for a month for easier management and better access for both the organizers and the participants. The theme for the summer program will be on Environment.
