Season 2. Episode 3.
Art critics 6 year old Bella and 8 year old Sophia talk about Marcel Duchamp's Fountain.

Why Fountain is a major landmark in 20th Century Art:
Duchamp got involved with Dada, an anti-rational, anti-art cultural movement. The day of the show, he bought a Bedfordshire model urinal from the J. L. Mott Iron Works in NY and signed it R. Mutt 1917" The exhibitors didn't know if it was a work of art or not decided to hide R. Mutt's Urinal from the exhibit. It was later probably thrown out with the trash. The NY Dadaist stirred controversy for Fountain being hidden from the show and put Dadaist Art Movement on the map. "Duchamp invented conceptual art and "severed forever the traditional link between the artist's labour and the merit of the work". Duchamp said that he wanted to "de-deify" the artist. The readymades (such as the Fountain) provide a way around inflexible either-or aesthetic propositions. They represent a Copernican shift in art. Fountain is what's called an "acheropoietoi,"an image not shaped by the hands of an artist. Fountain brings us into contact with an original that is still an original but that also exists in an altered philosophical and metaphysical state. " The prices for replicas reached its peak with the purchase of one of the eight 1964 replicas of "Fountain" for $1.7 million at Sotheby's in November 1999.
