Laptop Issue

My laptop has been like this for about a year. Sometimes it will boot fine, but a lot of the time it's like that. The lights flash, the fan flickers, but nothing. There seems to be no logic behind when it will boot, and when it does this instead. Want to fix it, because it's a brilliant laptop when it actually works. Have to use another laptop, because it's not reliable enough. Have tried all sorts. Any ideas?

EDIT: Oh, and I must add, sometimes if I do manage to get it running, it will suddenly just completely switch off, with no shut down process or anything.
