Are you standing outside, looking up at the sky...cursing the wondering stars?
Well, if I were you I'd throw rocks at the moon.
I'd say "damn you wherever you are".

I don't know where to start.
This cage round my heart locked up what I meant to say...what I felt all along the way.
Just wondering how come I couldn't take your breath away.

Cause I never sent roses. I never did enough.
I didn't know how to love you, though I loved you so much.

And I should have sent roses when you crossed my mind.
If for no other reason than the fact you were mine.
Yeah, I should have sent roses.

Looking back on my life, oh if fate should decide I could do it all over again...
I'd build no more walls. I'd stay true and recall fragrance of you on the winds.

You'll get better than me...someone who can see right from the start.
Given all that you need, I'll slip away...knowing I'm half the man I could be.

Cause I never sent roses. I never did enough.
I didn't know how to love you though I love you so much.

And I should have sent roses when you crossed my mind,
If for no other reason than the fact you were mine.
Yeah, should have sent roses.

Many music fans worldwide from Elton / Leon's youth era grew up with The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, the British Invasion, and we loved them all. It's also accurate historically that with MAD DOGS & ENGLISHMEN, Leon Russell and Joe Cocker introduced R & B to a lot of Americans (and the world) by transferring the Stax Revue format and Black Gospel to a hippie commune-on-wheels circus event which mesmerized the young and became legend - a midnight-movie eye-opener, a heart-warmer and a revelation for many. There were no real piano gods in late 60s guitar haven (not since Jerry Lee and Little Richard) so Leon made it cool again. He was one bigger-than-life cat. Part of what's beautiful in the song is there's so many in this story, and for one reason or another, it's appropriate for all. Leon was birth-named aptly Claude Russell BRIDGES. Having that MAD DOGS vinyl album cover in MY lap as that big band poured into my head was transformative indeed. It was a bridge. I'm happy I crossed it. It changed and influenced what I did ultimately with my life. It influenced Elton obviously and he's proclaiming it. There's no substitute for mileage and these guys are saying so, for sure. God bless 'em all.

FYI youngbloods & Elton fans & "wondering stars" - Leon has played with, arranged for, or otherwise influenced: Elton John, Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones, Frank Sinatra, Willy Nelson, Carl Radle, Bobby Keyes, The Band, Badfinger, Edgar Winter, Dave Mason, B.B. King, Shelter Records, Paradise Records, Freddie King, Don Preston, The Byrds, Sonny & Cher, (what became) The Wrecking Crew, Phil Spector's Wall of Sound, Ike and Tina Turner, Rita Coolidge, David Gates, Hal Blaine, Tommy Tedesco, Bobby "Boris" Pickett, Chuck Blackwell, Ringo Starr, Jesse Ed Davis, Gram Parsons, Barbara Streisand, Ricky Nelson, Aretha Franklin, Ann-Margret, Dean Martin, Jim Keltner, Marvin Gaye, Earl Scruggs, Don Nix, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Gap Band, Dwight Twilley, Jim Price, Phoebe Snow, Beach Boys, New Grass Revival, Steve Winwood, The Monkees, John Lennon, Charlie Watts, Marc Benno, Klaus Voorman, Herb Alpert, Tijuana Brass, Bill Wyman, Steve Cropper, Glen Campbell, Billy Preston, Matthew Moore, Pamela Polland, Bruce Hornsby, Jan & Dean, Gary Lewis & The Playboys, Paul Revere & The Raiders, The Ronettes, The Crystals, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, The Everly Brothers, The Righteous Brothers, The Tractors, The Flying Burrito Brothers, J.J. Cale, The Routers, Sam Cooke, Mamas & Papas, The Super Stocks, Bobby Womack, Don Costa, Bobby Darin, Delaney & Bonnie Bramlett, Wayne Newton, George Benson (This Masquerade), Claudia Lennear, the Tulsa "Church Studios", Barry Beckett, Spooner Oldham, the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section "Swampers" (nickname by Leon) and The Mad Dogs & Englishmen Tour, Film and Album. Mad Dogs & Englishmen would have been an entire career for most musical legends.

Leon was the top concert attraction worldwide in 1973 - Billboard Magazine. R & R Hall of Fame Induction March 14, 2011 - at last. We should have sent roses.

For all those with longer roads behind. To Jack Wessel, personification of loyalty.
I generate no personal gain from this Leon / Elton promotion whatsoever - this is love.

  • Midnight, you express my thoughts exactly. This collaboration...and Elton's endorsement...should make those R&R Hall of Fame people hang their heads in shame. This song is absolutely beautiful/touching/brilliant and has me in tears...and your extremely thoughtful and worked up video here is amazing...fantastic job!

  • @soggykc

God bless you ... you're exactly who the video was made for...

  • Fantastic Song isn't it?

I don't know how many times I've listened to it since last week, but it's more than I can count!

I really like the way you've done the video with the pictures you've used and how.

    Great Job!

    Thanks.

  • Wow, thank you. I have loved "Back to the Island" since it came out, and much of Russell's work still brings tears whenever I have the privelege. Leon, there must be MILLIONS of us who sing along with you, in our hearts and minds.

  • Great to see this 'union', but I recommend Leon fans go back to his first solo album after leaving Delaney & Bonnie. It's called 'Leon Russell' (orig. work title was 'Can a Blue Man Sing the Whites', and includes 'Delta Lady', 'Hummingbird', etc. w.Ringo Starr, Klaus Voorman and other stellar players. Arguably the best thing he ever did... and avail. on CD.

  • how dare anyone dislike sincerity? both voices bleed love and experience..

  • russell's voice has nothing to do with elton's; i'm sorry.

Elton's voice is... like... "woah who is singing?" u know
