My first own modelling work is what you can see in this little scene. I always thought I will be strictly bound to animating, but a 3DBuzz tutorial series, wich I really enjoyed, gave me the inspiritaion of creating my own models. So I took a bunch of reference screenshots from a portal-camera and started to tinker on the little beast.
For the first time this all scene modelling/skinning/animating took a long time, but the fact that I can recreate almost anything from a game is really satisfying, so I am sure this wasn't my last animation.
Turn HQ on or don't even watch it! :P

if you really mean it, you can learn the basics rather quick only from tutorials
my suggestion is: go to the videofxuniverse user on utube (I'm also subsribed to him), there you can find dozens of easy tutorials
my other suggestion is a community called 3DBuzz, register at their site, and you have free access to many tutorials (including a ~12 hour lenght tutorial about building a star wars ATST from nothing)
