So little alcohol, so much energy. 5mL of methanol or ethanol is ignited in a 5 gallon water bottle. The alcohol burns at such a high rate it
creates a rocket engine effect. If the mixture is just right,
it can knock ceiling tiles off. It looks really amazing at
night. After the burn, the bottle is capped and Charles Law is 8demonstrated. As the temperature decreases the volume decreases. The atmosphere crushes the cooling air in the bottle.

  • We did this in science today. TOTAL EAR RAPE!!

  • too much ethanol, not enough oxygen in the bottle

  • If you do this in the right type of bottle you can see the bottle expand as air rushes in.

  • Health and safety: never put the match in by hand, use a very long pole.

  • Not to get too nit picky but this is not a rocket. It's a basic pulse jet. Still looks sweet!

  • we did that today on our field trip to fort discovery center

  • this is a reynst valveless jet engine?

  • I wonder if a racquetball placed on top after would get sucked in, saw something similar with a glass jug and hardboiled egg. If only I saw this at my old office, where we had those water containers and a gallon jug of methanol for solvent testing.

  • cool, looks like an afterburner :p

  • we did this in my 8th grade science class, except we had it turned on it's side and wheels
