この間の国立競技場でのニュージーランド対オーストラリアのブレディスロー・カップ戦をきっかけに、よく知られているけどあまり理解されていないNZの有名な伝統文化、「­ハカ」について説明をしたいと思っています。
With New Zealand and Australia in town to play the Bledisloe Cup at the National Olympic Stadium in Tokyo, I thought it was a good opportunity to explain a bit about one of New Zealand's best known but least understood cultural exports: The Haka.

一般として、ハカはNZにある様々のマオリの族が戦いや訪問人に対して行う踊りです。数千の種類のハカが存在し、行う族の歴史、祖先、と伝統を伝わるものです。
Haka are traditional dances performed by Maori tribes in New Zealand, often performed prior to battle, or when laying down a challenge to a visitor. There are thousands of Haka that exist, and they often tell the history, ancestry, and tradition of the performing tribe.

一番有名なハカは、NZラグビー代表「オール・ブラックス」が行うハカです。「オール・ブラックス」という名前は着るユニフォームがすべて黒からです。「ハカ」は1905­年に初めて試合前に行ってから、伝統となり、毎回ンーティ・トア族の「テ・ラウパラハのハカ」を使ってきました。近年にいは、オール・ブラックスのオリジナルなハカを開発­し、特別な場合に行うがまだテ・ラウパラハのハカが一番有名で、ニュージーランドのすべての学生やラグビーファンが誇るハカだし、そして世界中では一番よく知られているハ­カです。
The most famous Haka is that performed by the New Zealand rugby team known as the "All Blacks" because of their all black jersey, shorts and socks uniform. First performed in 1905, the All Blacks have consistently used the haka of Te Rauparaha, a chief of the tribe Ngati Toa. In recent years the All Blacks have developed their own haka that they use for special occasions, but Te Rauparaha's haka remains the haka that every school kid and rugby fan in New Zealand, and often outside of New Zealand knows.

サッカー以外では他のスポーツでも、オリンピックでもNZユーに­フォームは基本的に真っ黒なんだけど、「オールブラックス」って­呼ぶのはNZ代表のラグビーチームだけです。

Used to live in NZ but didn't know what the Haka meant.

I always thought "Ka mate" meant "You shall die". Very interesting.

Wow, really interesting Hiko. I had no idea what it meant. What about the other types of haka? Do they also have background stories like this one?

ラグビーは野球虫の自分としては、あまりお目にかかれないですが­、スポーツ全般好きです。

「カンバッテ、カンバッテ。」=>「頑張って頑張って」と日本語­に似てたので同じニュアンスの意味と思ってました。試合前の気合­を入れる意味合いもあって。。それが「死」とは・・。死にもの狂­いでやるって言う意味なんですね。

あの踊り(？)は、ラグビーの華ですよね。

でも、イングランドのラグビーってどうなんでしょ？NZ＆オース­トラリア＆トンガとかあの辺の伝統強豪国から見て。キックばっか­りで得点取ってるじゃん、あんなのラグビーじゃない！なんて思わ­ないんですかね？素人意見ですが・・。

NZいいな、強くて。。日本も頑張って。。桜背負ってるんだから­！

私は１８歳の学生です。

今日の地理の授業でハカの話題があったので、気になって検索した­ら、彦左衛門さんの動画に出会いました。

もうひとつ質問なんですが、左胸のの羽はなにか意味があるのでし­ょうか？
