Watch a lesson taught by Tim Bedley, veteran of 20 years in the elementary school classroom, as he leads his students to come up with their own solution to an issue that has arisen in the first week of school.
Captions highlight Tim's infusion of the California Standards for the Teaching Profession (CSTP's) throughout the video, making this the perfect tool for training new teachers.
This is part 1 of 3.

  • Unfortunately, consensus isn't always right. What do you do about that? Then, what do you do about the fact that the majority isn't always right either?

  • @MrMZaccone I'm not sure if you are being sincere in your question. The answer is simple: I listen and/or check student responses and then clarify misunderstandings. If the students consistently agree on incorrect answers, that tells me the material is too advanced. Incorrect answers also drive future instruction. The key: tuning into student conversations. I was doubtful of this method until I used it. Now, I can't imagine ever going back to my old traditional teaching methods.

  • @tbed63 AH! I see. Yes I was quite sincere. Unfortunately, I didn't glean the goal of this methodology from the video presented. I misunderstood. Thank you for clarifying. I'm interested, where did you come across this methodology? I'm also a teacher, (albeit of an odd subject) and I'm always looking for ways to improve "throughput".

  • @MrMZaccone Cool. I'm glad you are interested in learning. I am too. I actually formed this pedagogy through synthesizing several different teaching methods together. I haven't seen any actual material on it...so I'm working on a book myself. We'll see if I ever finish it! ; )

  • @tbed63 It actually sort of reminded me of film I'd seen of Jaime Escalante

  • @MrMZaccone Wow! That's quite a compliment. Thank you very much!

  • I love this video clip; I showed it to my Master’s students to demonstrate how students use language in authentic ways. Also it demonstrates the expertise of the teacher as one who facilitates learning and one who partners with students as learners;
