On the day after Thanksgiving I went to the New York City Transit Museum. Here is the last slant R-40 pair (built 1968) in existence. When the transit exhibit opened in 1976 as the brainchild of Don Harold, IRT cars on display had no planking (which was added years after the museum opened) to fill the gap between the platform and the car body. Also there was no fencing along the platform edge. I don't know if there were incidents of children slipping into the gap, something I witnessed on Metro-North, but as you can see in this footage, the danger was very real. In the Metro-North incident at Bedford Hills, a boy just like the one in this video, attempts to jump over a 9" gap (jumping with both feet) and his feet land directly in the center of the gap. He landed on the trackbed on his feet and didn't even fall over or strike anything on the way down. Just calmly raised his hand and waited for someone to pull him up. On NYCT this could have resulted in him landing on a live contact shoe (all are energized if any on the car are on live third rail).

  • sweet the little girl and boy on the subway :D

  • @TheBerlin09 and by the way when the musuem opened, the 8 inch gap between the platform and the narrower IRT cars was NOT bridged. Nor was there any fencing of any kind along the platform edge.
