Oh hey. It's Sonic 1. It's not like I've done this game already *end sarcasm*
I've actually been meaning to re-do Sonic 1 for a long time, well, as Sonic anyway. This means no Spindash, no Tails, no Knuckles.
Just plain old Sonic 1. This is a re-make of my very first boss run, with improvements all round. So. Enjoy. Also stick around for at least the Labyrinth Zone. :P
Couple of Notes:
a) Human playing, in real time. I always think it looks obvious when I watch it back, but that doesn't stop people accusing me...
b) This is the original Sonic 1, so no spindash, and what not. Nothin' fancy.
c) Yes, i've already done this game. Several times. This is a improvement.
Boss Notes:
GREEN HILL ZONE:
You know the drill by now - bash him as much as possible whilst he descends, and then either stick to the left platform, or jump across like I do. It really doesn't make a slick of difference time wise.
MARBLE ZONE:
It's easily possible to get more than 2-3 hits on Robotnik per side, but going higher will put you at risk of taking damage.
Besides, what hits you gain on one side of the screen, you'll lose on the other.
SPRING YARD ZONE:
Ah hah. The first tricky boss. You want to stand close enough to Robotnik when he lowers himself to hit him repeatedly, but not so close you fall through the floor.
Remember : As soon as the floor starts shaking, it no longer counts as floor, so you fall straight through. You can hit him in the air if you time your jumps to when he's at the lowest point in the air.
LABYRINTH ZONE:
Arguably the most difficult battle in the game, especially if you don't know what you're doing. Like the Spring Yard Boss, you only have so long to do this, and you really want to try to stay ahead of the rising water.
This is probably the best strategy. You don't HAVE to "defeat" Eggbreath here, but I show off how. Doing this is really difficult, and you probably shouldn't attempt it if you're trying to actually get PAST this area. It was a fun challenge, and I pulled it off with Sonic, something I'd previously thought was impossible.
I can say, this boss has grown on me in recent years, and I enjoy the legitimate challenge it provides.
STAR LIGHT ZONE:
This is probably the easiest boss to totally mess up on, thanks to the catapults. You can either fling the spikey bombs back up at Eggman, or wait for them to descend and launch yourself up.
I generally find flinging the Bombs quicker. A combination of the two is recommended. Also, it IS possible to hit Robotnik without use of the catapult launch or spikey bombs - by standing in the middle of a see-saw, you can actually just jump up and hit him.
Actually attempting to defeat him this way is far too hard for it's own good Stick to the normal method.
FINAL ZONE:
Ah, the old'e final boss. To this day, I am not sure how to 100% guarantee you get every hit.
I tend to stand on the middle of the leftmost platform, in the hopes of spotting in a split second which tube holds Robotnik. I used to pause when this happened, but didn't this time and relied on luck. Unlike characters with the Spindash (where you have the response time to actually hit him every time), regular Sonic is too sluggish to do so.
I'm sure it's manageable with savestates or slowed down emulation, but.. that's cheating isn't it?
Final Note:
I use the classic "Retarded Sonic" cheat code during the ending credits... which stops the demo from jumping. This leads to some funny situations. Doing this at the start (Green Hill Footage) will actually desynchronise the rest of the ending.. which is what happened here.
To use this cheat, hold "A", "B" and "C" down. Whilst these are held down, Sonic cannot jump in demos. Quite the funny cheat. :D

the bosses really are that easy i just downloaded this from playstation plus store, it is pretty obvious that cheats were used here, for starters how do you get 17 lives?

What. Just. What. ... what are you on?
You think getting 17 lives in Sonic 1 is cheating?
You get a 1up for every 100 rings you get.
There are anywhere from 1-4 1up boxes per level.
You get a 1up every time you get 50,000 points.
Sonic 1 is an easy game. It hands lives out like candy.
The only cheat used here is the retarded Sonic code for the ending credits - something that has zero impact on the game itself.

@ACESpark you dont get an extra life for every 50,000 points on the downloaded from playstation store version, or for getting a hundred rings either, thats what made me wonder, you do get the extra life boxes though, but not 17 of them
sopranosfan87 11 months ago
@sopranosfan87 ... what?
You've always gotten a 1up every 100 rings. It's a staple of the Sonic series. It's in every Sonic game, ever.
Are you sure your ring total greater than 100? It doesn't count if you lose your rings.
Since the Playstation Store Version is just emulation, I doubt they would even bother changing something so game breaking.
