This has been Clutch Cargos.

wouldnt it make it less efficient to have to tilt the fans or props not sure which they are on this but couldn't you just tilt the little red rudder thing like so the wind bounces off it and pushes it forward haha (make two of them or that one longer )just saying save some energy there haha work smarter not harded

What are those red arrows?

@NASAPAV I think you would be forced to cut off the other fan, cause if you keep only one fan spinning the vehicle will tumble in the air , if u cut them both off you still have a chance to keep the vehicle stable and let the suspention and or auto rotation take over

@NASAPAV Well in these cases to recover from a total failure you could simply install and require recovery chutes. Its been around for years in small aircraft and even saved some lives. Beats the hell out of being dead.

what of music?

Can ducted fans be pressure-tip jet rotors? Like that APJ helicopter.
so when the engine fails the rotors still move free. Just a thought, don't flame meh.

that ducted fan animation reminded me of the dyson bladeless fan...lol

I don't think the flaps under the prop wash will affect the the pitch up or down of the nose. They are exactly at the center of the aircraft, which I assume would be where the center of gravity is and that is the pivot point.
if one of motor fail...R.I.P

There are 5 motors on each side (gas generators), so that if one fails- there is still plenty of power to keep the vehicle aloft. However, if the fan failed on either side, you are correct - the vehicle would crash. But a fan failure in a protective shroud would be an incredibly rare event, especially during the 30 seconds of transition flight.

Reminds me of something like a tip-jet rotorcraft, but instead of a rotor the reaction forces drives a ducted fan. And then you add the complexity of something like the Osprey tilt-rotor to that...
Would be interesting to see if anyone could pull it off past the conceptual phase.

Yes, I agree. There are real challenges with this propulsion system. Metis is doing some exciting work on tip driven warm gas generators - perhaps if they can show a breakthrough at the propulsion level, then more feasible integration solutions can be looked at.
