Peter Lynch committed a crime by destroying that flag. Yes, it was being flown incorrectly. Yes, it should have been flown with an American flag above it. However, instead of ripping it down and destroying it, the proper course of action would have been to notify the university and inform them about the mistake.
With that said, I do think the sentence was a bit harsh. There was no need for probation; fining him and having him replace the destroyed property would have been more than sufficient.

I can be patriotic as much as anyone but this moron could have easily told the people flying the flag about his concerns. Also do you think if it was an Italian or German flag he would have done the same?
