Louis Vierne - Fantomes (op. 54)

"Grave in C sharp minor and 12/8 time. This unusual piece occupies a special place of its own in Vierne's oeuvre. The title stipulates "pour le concert seulement" (for concerts only). Its bizarre character, its virtuosity and its magical palette render the piece comparable with "Feux folets" (Suite II, No. 4). It is a conversation between seven players, each represented by a particular musical idea. The following is the text Vierne added at the end of the piece: " (Ben van Oosten)




1) L'Évocateur: Qui donc prépare l'avenir? ...
2) Le jeune esthéte: C'est moi... Je suis libre!
3) Le vieux pédant: C'est moi... Je garde la tradition!
4) Le négre: L'avenir est au danseur.
5) Le singe: L'avenir est á la fantasie...
6) Le mendiant (joueur d'Orgue de Barbarie): Il est á la misére... "Solo Mio".
7) Le Destin: Il n'est nulle part et partout.

2) The Young Esthete: It is I... I am free!
3) The Old Pedant: It is I... I maintain the tradition!
4) The Negro: Future belongs to the dancer.
5) The Monkey: Future is in the hands of fancy...
6) The Beggar (who plays the street-organ): It belongs to misery... "Solo Mio".
7) Fate: It is nowhere and everywhere.
