Nature Education Centre (NEC)

FRIM-MNS-SHELL Nature Education Centre
Formally opened in January 1993, NEC was the first centre of its kind in Malaysia. With the mission of promoting positive attitudes, appreciation and conservation of our natural heritage through hands on and participatory learning methods, the NEC fulfills the objective of implementing Environmental Education in Malaysia.
As the name, the NEC is the product of a tripartite agreement between Forest Research Institute Malaysia, Malaysian Nature Society and Shell Malaysia. The centre is managed by MNS, receives annual grants by Shell Malaysia and is located in greenery forest of FRIM.
16km from the heart of KL, in Kepong, is the location of FRIM- home to the NEC. At FRIM you may find a variety of forest trails, waterfalls, ponds, canopy walkway all set amongst forest reserves and arboretums.
Shell Malaysia as approaches by MNS way back in 1989, for the sponsorship of the project. Shell was wolly supportive of the concept of establishing a permanent centre for nature and environmental education, especially for the young generation.
The NEC is open to members of public, specialist groups, school groups, members of the MNS Kelab Pencinta Alam and MNS members. In 2008, NEC conducted 47 nature programs, for 1969 visitor including kids, school students, corporate groups and tourists.
NEC offers outdoor learning activities lasting from 3 hours to stays of 3days 2 nights. Activities format is mostly informal, hands-on activities so that participants learn through experience rather than by lectures.
