Had this family remained in Pakistan, they would not have been exposed to Western culture, and it is likely that the daughter would not have refused her arranged marriage. The problem is that they left Pakistan for a country where the predominant culture is based on free choice, and this daughter chose the Western culture over her family's heritage.

Its a combination of Islamic repression of women, and the fact that women are considered objects of "honor" for the men in the family.
