well, congrats on releasing a fish to die of blindness. studies have shown pike held by their eyes have a near 100% mortality rate. your eyes pop back into your eye sockets too when you shove your fingers in them, doesn't mean they are undamages.

Yes i agree also not to grabs its eyeballs, but if you pinch infront of its eyes, that its optic nerves, and the fish will stay calm.

that fish is not dead... pulling the fish out of the water like that is a tried and true method, The eyes push back into the scull, does no damage to the fish, acts as a pressure point on the fish, keeping it from thrashing around.

Last year we caught one that was bigger than that one 43.5" 21" girth out of a 9" hole it scared me when I saw it come into the hole luckily the ice was about 4" deep otherwise we may not have got it in the hole.

this fish took us about ten minutes to land it was alot of fun fighting it and it was very cold filming. We caught it using a 9" LIVE CRAPPIE. I WAS RELEASED

It will average 80% or more hookups on all species of fish from bluegills to pike including yelowfin tuna and snook.
