  • @ACLTony funny you meniton countless hours i started looking up stuff and thats how i found this vid lol i was on for1.5 hours before i knew it! was almost late to work! thanks for all that Info! i didnt know that IRT BMT IND were companies!!! but iirc i remember seeing some IRT trains with the multi colored seats a while back, but arent those usually used on the BMT/IND lines?

  • @easternpiro - Forgot to mention. The IRT trains use the number system. BMT/IND uses letters. Just google New York City Subway System. There are at least two websites with a lot of detailed information and good photos. If you're a subway fan, be careful as you can easily spend hours hooked looking through all of the info. Enjoy!

  • @easternpiro - Not the tracks, the width of cars & tunnels. IRT cars are narrower as are some of the tunnels on sharp curves. BMT/IND cars were built wider. Originally IRT, BMT, IND were separate companies. Each each built their systems according to their own plans. MTA had a cost analysis performed years back. To modify IRT station platforms and tunnels to fit the wider BMT/IND type cars, cost estimates ran in the millions! Deemed not worth it & better to keep and improve the 3 systems as is.

  • @ACLTony WOW. I didnt know there was a difference in tracks etc. why did they make them different? and what is the BMT/IND trains? are these teh A,C,E etc?

  • @DrSurprise the tracks are all standard gauge, with the space between the rails at 4ft-8 1/2"; just like the rest of the US class 1 railroads, including Amtrak. The difference between the IRT and BMT/IND cars is the length and width of the bodies. The narrow and shorter IRT cars can run on BMT/IND tracks and tunnels with no problems, but the BMT/IND cars are too wide for IRT station platforms & some tunnel curves.

  • werent the redbirds IRT trains? how could they fit on the BTM and IND tracks?

  • they do look like r38s because of the suns glare but look at the cab windows those are r32s

  • R32s are in work service.

  • Its wierd seeing A and B Division cars together

  • WTF nice view and amazing vid

but two cars together kinda look creepy
