MONSTER ROAD is a feature length documentary about the life and work of legendary underground animator Bruce Bickford. Best known for his collaborations with Frank Zappa in the 1970s, Bickford is an international cult figure who has influenced generations of animators while somehow eluding mainstream notoriety. Directed by Brett Ingram, MONSTER ROAD won sixteen awards including "Best Documentary" at the Slamdance Film Festival before a two-year run on Sundance Channel. I've always wondered why I never liked CGI/computer animation but it has always left me cold. It's at its worst when it tries to pass as reality and at its best when it's pure animation. That said, it is completely sterile and devoid of any signs of humanity or nature: hair, bodily fluids, foul odors, ugliness, rotting material, sex, energy, etc. There isn't any contact between the artist and his/her medium in CGI - it's all virtual - like much of modern day human interaction. This is a problem.
