'Albumblatt' is the name given to a beautiful short piano piece by Johannes Brahms written out by the composer in a guestbook in Göttingen in 1853. Conductor and musicologist Christopher Hogwood brought the discovery to BBC Radio 3 and pianist András Schiff came into Studio 80A at Broadcasting House in London to play the piece for Radio 3's Music Matters, to be transmitted on Saturday 21 January 2012 (listen online in HD Sound on the Radio 3 web site: http://bbc.in/wml2dA). This short video about the discovery includes an extract from the Music Matters item.

  • Absoloutley beautiful. What a wonderful gem, I'm so glad it was discovered. Quick question, will the score be available? Like an official version of it? I've managed to find a scan of the original manuscript online, but it's quite difficult to make sense of it. I would really love to play the piece through myself.

  • @losinggrip1993 Yes, the sheet music will be published by Bärenreiter in February as part of a new edition of Brahms' Horn Trio in E flat major, Op 40 edited by Christopher Hogwood. Search for 'Bärenreiter' for more info. Steve Bowbrick, BBC Radio 3

  • Search "Andrew Sun plays Brahms Albumblatt in A minor ", the piece can be heard in its entirety in a superbe rendition.

  • Thanks InXLsisDeo, you can also hear the whole of Schiff's performance on the Radio 3 web site. You'll find a link on the Radio 3 homepage. Steve Bowbrick, Radio 3

  • Yo Hanis Brahms?

    wtf

  • The World Premiere was given in Seattle Washington at the Meany Theatre on April 28, 2011 by Craig Sheppard. There is now a video of the performance up on Youtube.

  • I must say I enjoyed that!

  • The melody's also very similar to what Meredith Willson would later use for a song in "The Unsinkable Molly Brown." "I'll never say No to you / Whatever you say or do..."

  • If you were leaving someones house , and wanted to sign a visitors book, wouldn't it be second nature to autograph something that didn't take too long to scribble down ? Maybe he had a few glases of wine ! Of course it's a signature . Congratulations for clouding the obvious, using this as an article for self promotion and making yourself look like the emperors new clothes !

  • I agree that many will think that this discovery has been over-hyped given the fact that the melody is very familiar from the horn trio.
