This company town was created by the Bethlehem Coal Company, and they spared no expense. The entire Town, houses, public buildings and the coke ovens were constructed of varying shades of yellow bricks. Most patch towns had duplex frame homes as designed by the HC Frick Coke Co. This was part of the "Klondike" coal fields of south western PA The town wrapped around a hill, with the public school at the very top. (no longer exists) the operation was open around the turn of the century, and probably ceased coke operations in the 1960's. The mine operated until the 1980s. The homes are in Marianna, the shopping is across the river in East Marianna. Located 7 miles south of US 40 at Bealsville. Visit www.stuffthatsgone.com for everything coke oven, trolley, railroad and old roads!

  • @IMNOTAPOLICEOFFICER Yeah I climbed in..8 feet High 16 feet diameter

  • @IMNOTAPOLICEOFFICER Mapquest it...if you turn off 40 at Bealville it is 7 miles from there

  • Maybe you can answer this question? Where these inside an actual building or always outside? What was made in these ovens? Is there any photos that show them while in use?

  • @mrSarcastic1984 no they were never inside...they cooked coal and got it to its most purest form, "coke". this was and is the fuel used to make steel. They are all gone because the EPA shut them down for good in 1972.

go to our website and search the shoaf coke ovens to see a video of them operating.
