No, it wasn't a joke.
A woman told a 911 operator that horses were running loose along a road in Chula Vista on Wednesday. But she wasn't the only one to report the surreal stampede, according to the 911 calls posted on The San Diego Tribune's site. Others witnessed what turned out to be wild horses (possibly from Mexico) leading a group of ranch horses through the suburbs in the middle of the afternoon. But that's not all. There were news helicopters, police, Border Patrol agents and San Diego Humane Society workers giving chase. There was also "a guy on a horse and he has rope," said the parkway caller.
She was describing OK Corral owner Paul Rucobo, whose horses were among the runaways. He and other cowboys helped round up the horses.
Another concerned caller said "those horses have entered the Olympic training compound."
In this footage from WKRG (above), you can see a U.S. Border Patrol helicopter chasing the herd, which galloped into the U.S. Olympic Training Center and circled a flag court before hitting the road again, reports AP.
The herd's escapade ended when OK Corral ranch hand Abel Canales lassoed the lead horse and escorted the herd to the ranch. "I felt like a cowboy out in the Old West," he told the Tribune.
Some horses sustained leg injuries. The county shelter is taking care of seven horses now.
