Kissimmee, Florida Birder goes Butterfly chasing. Bird-watching and Butterfly chasing are quite similar. Of course butterflies do not vocally call to one another nor sing. June 26th, 2010, Excerpts from Annual Butterfly Count at Disney's 12,000 acre Wilderness Preserve with Buck and Linda Cooper leading the survey. Five-hundred and forty-six butterflies representing Forty-one species were identified on the Preserve.
The most frequently observed butterfly was the Grey Hairstreak @ 121. The Palmedes Swallowtail 58, and Zebra Swallowtails 50. Of special interest was the one Berry's Skipper. Zarucco Dustywing, Ocola Skipper, Delaware Skipper and Whilabout are just a few of my first time observations.
Birds insisting of being observed include, 7 Turkeys, Meadowlarks, Bluebirds, 4 Florida Scrub Jays (ws-bb approached and followed us), Red-shouldered hawks and juvenile, Towhees, Bachman's Sparrow, Male Northern Parula, White-eyed Vireo, Turkey and Black Vultures, Bald Eagle and juvenile.
Also observed was the gator being mobbed by Turkeys and a young armadillo.
