A few days went by, and I hadn't seen Cleo. I meant to ask for her number, but being the little dork I am, I chickened out and sat in my seat, and stared at her like an idiot until she left. I knew she could feel my gaze, but she didn't do a thing about it. She could've been oblivious, but I knew she was waiting for me. And I screwed up yet again ... great
I finally decided that I didn't need her number, no matter how cute or unpredictable and witty and sarcastic and gentle and pretty she was....
I didn't need her number, even if she was all those GREAT things. It was as simple as that.
So to keep my mind busy, I decided to spend my last three weeks of summer studying some stage directions and camera angles just to get me prepped and ready for the new school year at the local Coffee Bean. I was going to study and clean out my mind. Cleo was a minor distraction, and if I blocked her out for long enough, she might not find a way back in.
"Hey, Logan." I heard a soft voice call. I turned around, expecting to find Margo, but I was startled when it was Cleo, holding a box filled to the brim with old clothes. I turned to look at her. She stood directly in front of the door, and the more I looked at her, the more I noticed the sun behind her. It burned, but I tried not to acknowledge it.
"Hey Cleo, um...how'd you know where to find me?" I asked timidly. She shrugged casually but kept her eyes locked with mine, "It was just a coincidence, I guess."
"Oh," I tapped my pencil in a soft beat on the table, trying my best to think of what to say.
"For a senior who seems like they've made the best out of their college years ... you're awfully quiet." Cleo laughed, crossing her thin legs. I tried to laugh, but I was a bit offended by the comment. I knew I was quiet, and I knew that I was boring...but she didn't need to point it out.
But I couldn't stay mad or hold a grudge with someone kind, and more importantly, I can't stay mad at someone with a face like hers. She just radiated and shined. No, she wasn't wearing any glittery jewelry... I doubt she was wearing any at all. She dressed very simply in a gray baseball T shirt and skinny jeans. There was nothing to interesting and nothing too specific. She was just so simple...I wanted to say it scared me, but honestly, it was quite refreshing.
"Thank You...?" I tried to grin, but ended up sneering.
"That wasn't a compliment... but sure, I guess you're welcome?" She chuckled, her mocha like eyes squinting and small dimples appeared at the edges of her mouth. I just sort of... smiled. I was kind of eyeing her, up and down...every curve and angle and feature. I hope she wasn't noticing my stare.
"So what's with the clothes?" I asked, eyeing the bin. Cleo shrugged, "I was going to donate them, but if you want them you can have them...?" I shook my head, pushing the clothes towards Cleo again, "No thanks, honestly... I'm not a closet transvestite."
Cleo laughed, "Your words, not mine."
We stayed silent for a moment before Cleo started again, "Why don't you talk that much Logan?"
I tried to smile, but the way Cleo had said it was sad. I couldn't just shrug the question, I had to answer it because Cleo sat proudly in front of me, waiting, "I just have nothing to say."
"Everyone has something to say. It's human, we all have opinions you know." She scoffed.
I didn't know what to say. I was locked down by her words. She was trying to trick me into opening up. I didn't want to, though. I have liable reason, I just don't. Simple as that.
"Well... I don't." Cleo nodded, and leaned back in her seat,
"That's what I like about you Logan," She paused, and I looked up at her. She had a small, grim smile on her face, "You're a little weird, and a little insecure, but I mean that in the best way. You're stubborn and at times, I can tell you offend people when you don't talk. But, I like that. You're weird. You're not pretending to be anyone else. You're weird because...there's not many guys like you."
"Is that a compliment," I crossed my eyebrows, slightly flattered and slightly confused.
Cleo nodded her smile tight, "Yes... yes it is."
I smiled as a feeling of content washed over me. I wasn't frightened by her opening me up, but I was more scared in general way. I've never been out of my comfort zone, but she taking me out little by little, and I hadn't done one thing to stop it.
"You sure you're not a closet transvestite?" She laughed.
I shook my head happily, "Well, I could be... if you roll that way."
"I don't, but keep up your offer. You never know."
I marveled at Cleo as I stared into her chocolate colored eyes. They way she laughed and joked... she compelling and sweet and magnetic. I could feel something happening.
