@jimmythechimp2: I work in a childrens hospital and they use ketamine as an anaesthetic. Most general anaesthetics are fairly dangerous, especially for kids, as well as for adults, wheras ketamine does not completely knock a child out, it simply causes them to "detactch from their bodies", which is clearly whats happening here.
