this is a great post. I am particularly pissed off because a 'telethon 88' mug that I stole from a place I was working a couple of years ago was stolen in turn from me by some other, more enterprising thief. If anyone has a telehon 88 mug - or even a t shirt - please let me know!
all part of common purpose and the fabian bastards no doubt.
telethon's were better fun than the bbc campaigns like children in need and comic relief, which are all about the celebrities and not about the 60m of us other mortals who go out and fundraise - mr. ordinary doesn't matter no more to the beeb.
The protests from the so called "disability rights" organisation probably had less to do with the franchise and culture changes at ITV in 1993, along with the early '90s recession that led to poor donations in 1992.
Dont I know it? LOL! I remember the protest at Telethon 92 and it didnt get axed it stayed on air, but they kept the protesters away! I even know that a guy was presenting it in a wheelchair so they werent patronising!
Do you blame them, ITV was never the shame, Also 1992 telethon got axed also due to protests from a group of disability rights activists from the actvist group, the Campaign for Accessible Transport, later known as the Direct Action Network. Its members claimed ITV Telethon broadcasts had depicted people with disabilities in a patronising fashion.
This had included a demonstration outside of LWT's Kent House
