The Phoenix Firecamp, a free, weeklong overnight camp for girls ages 14 to 19. Sponsored by Fire Service Women of New York State (FSWNYS), the program is an abbreviated version of a recruit class designed to acquaint young women with opportunities in fire and emergency services.
Each year the program accepts 24 campers and no prior experience is needed. Many of the girls who have taken part in the camp have taken careers in their local fire and EMS departments.
The Utica Fire Department and Westmoreland Volunteer Fire Department partnered with FSWNYS in producing the Phoenix camp, the first of its kind in the Northeast. Instructors and team leaders, who are female members of various fire departments, donate their time and pay their own expenses to help with the program.
The camp is accepting applications for its fifth summer, running July 17 to 22, 2011. For more information or to apply, visit www.fswnys.org.
