2/20/2007. The port of New York and New Jersey is the third largest port in the world. Cargo for 35 percent of Americans passes through the port every day. But world-class cargo ships are getting larger -- which means deeper water is needed to accommodate them. A massive 1.6 billion dollar corps of engineers project is underway to deepen the harbor to 50 feet. Mary Cochran was aboard the New York, which may just have the hardest job in the effort.
