Linux Debian Lenny and AmigaOS 4.1, both used on the same hardware, a Sam440 running at 667 Mhz only. Details on this test:
- hardware is a Sam440ep board made by ACube Systems
- both systems are installed on the same harddisk, a SATA 2.5" WesternDigital
- Linux is using XFCE as the window manager
- AmigaOS 4.1 is used with compositing (transparency) on.
- both systems doesn't handle PCI GART yet.

  • The only thing is with that Startup the Amiga looks like a PC, not like a Real Amiga!- But its a goo demostration about any real good OS.

  • @thedrummerboycr This is only the kickstart module load that you see in text form. The from 5:02 on you see the OS loading with an AmigaOS picture. No lame text there :-)

  • I have a few problems with this comparison:

    1. AmigaOS4 is PPC native, linux is not

    2. Linux probably doesnt have acellerated video drivers for PPC (no 3d or video acelleration)

    3. All unix based operating systems boot slower than "regular" operating systems (debian took 14 sec on my dual xeon 3ghz, configured like your setup with XFCE)

    4. A working flash plugin for the browser would be more impressive

  • @thedarkhenrik 1) Huh? Here Linux doesn't run emulated but native on the hardware.

    2) I don't know really.

    3) depends on what you call "regular" :-)

    4) I agree. One day....

  • Know how lame CUSA is

  • @rasvoja Agreed. Those guys are in the same boat as Mehdi Ali and Irvin Gould, the people that brought Amiga Inc down.

  • A fairer test would be to use MPlayer on both AmigaOS and Linux.

  • It's pretty ironic you use mplayer in OS 4.1, when it's probably the fastest media player and grew up on Linux.

Still, nice demo. We've gotten too used to GUI sluggishness slowing us down.
