  • @FRAGIORGIO1 Although I would like to hear the advantages of these constitutional monarchies. I mean what would be the point of having a king if he is not involved in *any* politics or statecraft? People would then just do things in the king's name without the king being able to do anything about it and the corrupt politicians still run the show behind the scenes.

  • @initvesa No, I said I was referring to Democratic Monarchies. Morocco seems to be democratizing and is popular apparently, as is Jordan. The King of Tonga seems to be popular. I don't know about Kuwait and Oman, etc.

  • @FRAGIORGIO1 You also did not mention all the *absolute* monarchies, which mostly include just about every single Arab country affilated with the Saudis.

  • He was a real lady

  • RIP Your Royal and Imperial Majesty,Otto. May your Blessed Father Karl intercede for you and for us all.

  • I might point out that the Presidential Head of State pattern, as used in Italy and Germany among others, is a pale and dull reflection of a constitutional monarchy. The Presidents of the Republics in those cases are old politicos chosen to represent a unity they never had in their partisan life. Furthermore, the interest in them is limited in their own nation where they are remembered as ex-politicians of some party, and in foreign countries they receive little interest as dull and unimportant

  • @Bernie1927 Yes, a monarchy would be an imposed and not matured system here, since we have been a republic for 235 years or so. If we ever joined in a pan English-speaking world-wide union, there could be some logic in having the British monarch as a historical figure-head symbol of unity. Otherwise, there would be no sense. Presidents are alternatively popular and hated and are both head of state and head of government (unless the opposition has Congress!).

  • @FRAGIORGIO1 You know I believe that our present system is not working. In theory it sounds terrific and when it was first established with the original constitution it was great but today it has been so corrupted that you can not recognize the original intent. That said, I might be tempted to agree with you but - we just can't afford it !! In the UK it has evolved but if we started it here it would be so artificial and forced that it would just not fit, don't you agree?

  • The Habsburgs have been the de jure monarchs of Hungary for hundreds of years. Karl VI was annointed in Budapest and crowned with St Stephan's crown. They helped fight the attacks of the Turks in previous centuries, including the defeats of the Turks at Zenta and Peterwardein by Habsburg armies under Prince Eugene of Savoy. When the dual monarchy was broken up after WW I, Hungary was left weakened and at the mercy of the powerful Nazis and Communists who bloodied and oppressed the people.

  • @Bernie1927 To say monarchy is over is to ignore reality. The UK, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxemburg, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Japan, Thailand, Spain, and some lesser known places have very popular monarchies. I am talking about Constitutional, Democratic monarchies where the monarch is the head of state, but is not a politician. The monarchies I mentioned have both constitutional and psychological and cultural importance in their countries. Unfortunately, Archduke Otto died yesterday, at 98.
