A Plea to reason:

This is aaronk1994, addressing you for probably the last time. Consider this an ultimatum, and a final plea to reason.

What makes you think that you can take a text thousands of years old, in a different culture, context, and language, and impose western, 21st century values on it?

Why don't you at least do a minimal amount of research into the background of the OT before uncritically, and immorally ripping another culture apart, just because you're too ignorant to actually look into the responses and refutations by real OT scholars?

I have read these scholars, and there is much more to researching the OT than cherry picking through it, finding a verse without taking the slightest glimpse at the conditions of the situation, literary data, or context, and ranting and screaming about it.

In your mind, no matter how many times we offer responses to this stale canard of an argument, nothing will ever convince you that God was not immoral in righteously punishing horrible nations for their evil.

Although you have left Christianity, the fundamentalist way of thinking has stayed with you. "My view is right, and you can't change it."

Many people call me a fundamentalist, and the truth is, I am. But not in the traditional sense.
I follow the Bible's teachings, such as questioning everything (1 Thessalonians 5:21) and looking for evidence. (Acts 17)

But you sir, are a fundamentalist in the traditional sense. "I don't care what you say; I'm right and youre wrong."

This is not a rational way to argue, and it really isn't arguing at all.

You claim day in and day out to have a superior mind to theists, using words like "rational, logical, freethinking, reasonable" when the truth is, you aren't any of those things. You and other atheists like you have only invented these things to inflate your own egos, not to rationally argue.

There are still some reasonable skeptics left on the fundie atheist ridden world of the interwebs. But you are not one of them.

Maybe sometime you'll realize that you can't just rip a bible verse out of nowhere, and just yell about it, and expect us to take that as an argument. Maybe someday you'll read some scholarship, and understand that Christianity is a much more complex belief than Santa Clause, or the pink unicorn. Maybe some year, you'll become a rational skeptic, and learn how to argue and debate without 5+ insults in every sentence.

Swanard quick thing about the fist quetion...you didn't answer the question.

why do YOU take 21st Century values and place them on the bible...it's completely irrelevent to the question to say that AaronK does the same thing...i'm not sure if you have sibligs, but it would be like if your mother said Swanard why did you eat that cookie, and you said well my brother did it, or well you ate a cookie too. it doesn't answer the question. so why do you apply 20th century interpritation to old text?

There is a difference in regards to what we do with the bible. Aaron tries to impose Bronze Age mythology as moral teaching that is applicable in the 21st century. The advantage comes from saying we use our morality (which has improved with 2000 years of experience) to go back and judge the morality of the old testament to be inferior to modern-day society. We can't impose our morality on those people; they've been dead for thousands of years.

That depends on what YOU choose to focus on. If you consider the bible as historically singular and prominent then you won't give a rat's ass about other nations and cultures. Yes I know the OT is Israel-centric. It was believed Israelites were the god of Abraham's chosen people and not for anyone else.

The NT obviously deviates from this but do not discount the rich historical contributions of many other great nations and cultures. The Greeks, chinese, Druids, nordics and many others.

Dude, you need to do some serious historical study. The Jews have been at the core of most of the really important historical events, as God intended. And it is the God who first spoke to them, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, whose Name now fills the earth. The Hebrew monotheistic tradition has had more of an impact on human civilisation than any other set of ideas in history. In my opinion because it rests upon divine foundations.

Israel is PART of human history. They are no more the "core" of human history than any other culture nation and civilizations in the world.

BTW why are Israelites so important to god in the OT? Why is there no mention of Africans, Asians, Nordics and anyone else who lived other places besides the middle east? This is more evidence that the bible is a man made collection of local scripts written by men completely ignorant of anything else but their own existence in their own local geography.
