"WikiLeaks chief Julian Assange was granted political asylum by Ecuador on Thursday, setting up a standoff with the British government, which has vowed to block his exit from the country. The announcement was made by the Ecuadorian foreign minister, Ricardo PatiƱo. He said that Ecuador was granting Assange political asylum because it believed he was being persecuted for his actions as the head of WikiLeaks...".* The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down.

Britain coming into Ecuador and forcefully taking Julian Assange from the embassy is not only a violation of international law, it is an act of war!

Because that would be *illegal* for Sweden to do so. Have you not read the Swedish extradition law? There's an official English translation, I can get you the link if you want. The government is prohibited on giving even a nonbinding opinion until after the Judiciary has taken up the case. It can't announce a binding decision until after the Judiciary rules. To do otherwise would violate multiple laws and the Swedish constitution. Swedish legal scholars have pointed this out over and over.

If all they care about is the rape charges then why has sweden not agreed to not extradite him to the US for his charges of "terrorism" if he is guilty? Assange promised to come back and stand trial if they promised they wouldn't extradite him to the US. Open your eyes, they're in this with the US.

I'm sorry, when did he hand himself over to stand trial?

I'm sorry, but he *is* running from rape charges. He has been anklagad on four counts which have been upheld on the evidence by multiple Swedish courts: 1 unlawful sexual coersion, 2 molestation, and 1 rape.
