Smith Reynolds fathered a daughter with his first wife, Anne Cannon, about 3 years before he married Libby Holman - so it is both highly improbable that he was gay or permanently impotent. There also nothing to support the fact that his second child, with Holman, wasn't his...

  • A lot of people don't know the difference between gay/bisexual, or they can't understand that not everyone fits into a category, especially during Clift's lifetime. I agree with what you say about only he knows who he was.

  • He was bisexual is what his siblings said in interviews. That's different than gay. He had relationships with both men and women.

  • clearly clift was not bisexual, in his prime days he could of got any women on the planet, even liz taylor, but he didnt, he was only in relationships with men

  • A lovely and loving tribute to Libby and Monty--both fascinating people, and neither one could bit into the "boxes" often dictated by society. Sexuality isn't black or white, and many people put everything not 100% hetero into the "gay" catagory. None of us will never know for sure about Monty, but I suspect he was bisexual, although toward the end sexually active mainly with men. That wouldn't make him less bi though. I could discuss this all day... Thanks for sharing!

  • Wonderful song - Thank God Clift had this relationship with Libby. It caused him to turn down the lead Sunset Boulevard - he didn't want to play a part so close to his real life, so Billy Wilder got William Holden instead - which revived his career.

  • Someone wise was probably right while making a qoute about how it would have been better if this sensitive man had not come to Hollywood. But platonic relationships do exist even among non celebs. The ones who get in real life that are lucky in a way. I am female and I always admired Ms Audrey Hepburn. I like Natalie Portman, Jordana Brewster, Jessica Alba and that type of women terribly. But in a platonic way:)

  • But he also did talk about living with a wife and kids when he bought his Manhattan home. I have visited the place and it was a spiritual experience indeed. It did seem he had some unfinished dreams and that was one...Maybe that happened because he was confused about his orientation and yes, as some people said here it was a relative thing for him. It's not that easy to lead life in the public eye.

  • @ladyvee7110, This discussion happened over two years ago. Still would like to chip in something. I heard that at the outset Monty Clift was bisexual but later on in life he turned exclusively gay. Guess that happened sometime in the 50s. I also read somewhere that he said he loved women but liked men the other way. Most of his relationships later on his life with women were platonic. He was devoted to women such as Liz Taylor. They shared a special bond & hope share the same now in Heaven.

  • A good family life and the perfect balance changes many equations in life. It would have been same for him too. It was not to be and is a painful thought. May God bless him and may he and all he liked keep smiling from up there:)

  • @crosssover ,Yeah she could have been. Bessie Mae( the name he gave her) was beautiful and so was he, inside & out. And I am saying this on Norma Jean's Birthday this year. They are playing 'The MIsfits' on Tcm tonight. They were close too but he needed someone who could maintain the right balance- being a great wife and mom along with being a great person. It could have been Bessie Mae,she wanted to marry him or anyone who was beautiful and would take care of him and love him truly.

  • libby holeman was gross,

  • monty is one of the most underated actors
