"It seems clear to me heroin is the No. 1 financial asset of Osama bin Laden," Representative Mark Steven Kirk, Illinois
Republican, told The Washington Times almost 3 years ago when he came back from a fact-finding mission in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Bin Laden is reaping $24 million alone from one narcotics network in Kandahar, Afghanistan, according to Mr. Kirk's investigation. "The most important thing here is to change the language to not describe Osama bin Laden anymore as a terrorist, but to more accurately describe him as a narco-terrorist," said Representative Kirk.

Doug Wankel, a former Drug Enforcement Administration official who is point man for the U.S. counternarcotics initiative at the American Embassy in Kabul, says the opium industry is "financing terrorism. It's financing subversive activities. It's financing warlordism ." Wankel described the drug trade as a "national security threat to Afghanistan, the region and the world."

  • The Taliban ARE funding themselves through selling opium. The reason that opium production has increased is because when the Taliban had control over the nation, their oppressive bureaucracy was trying to eradicate the "evil" opium harvests. It's one of the few good things they were doing. Now, it's more important that they be able to fund their war by selling opium. With 20 000 troops, most of whom are fighting the Taliban, the US can't hope to stop the opium poppies.

  • USAGOV leaders are now overtly saying they are not even trying to eradicate the opium which pays for the IEDS that kill and cripple our troops. If this doesn't prove to the brainwashed that USAGOV WANTS this conflict to expand, nothing will.

  • To spell it out; in order for the USAGOV to expand this war with a lose knit bunch of fanatics, USAGOV must make sure the fanatics are well-funded and by allowing afghan opium production to increase 2,000% since the invasion that has put about 100 billion dollars into the hands of al-Queda.

  • And let's not use strawman arguments about why we can't stop the opium. Those fields are wide open to our aircraft and are the PRIMARY and KNOWN source of terrorist funding. We can use herbicide bombs or firebomb the hell out of all those fields within a month with just a couple of our billion dollar bombers. Anybody with half a brain can figure that out for themselves.

  • The people running this government are monsters. We have to stop them. The CIA funds terrorists, right now, they are funding an AL Qaeda offshoot out of Pakistan to engage in terrorist acts in Iran to make Iran seem unstable. The sickness must stop, we must get rid of the cancer in America. RP2008! Operation American Freedom! That's not newspeak, it's for real.

  • Great question: just duplicate MLKing's approach.

  • taliban was largely funded by pakis who wante dto control Afg by proxy with help of their US and saudi allies, it is a known fact taliban was created with paki monies and support and benefited only paki interets not Afghan interests

  • If only there is a manual book "how to stop government monsters for a commoner". How can a commoner fight them? They have money, military power and the list goes on. Before you get to white house for your opinion to be heard, you probably get shot down by the police lol...protest rallies are useless, they are going to ignore or give another speech of lies to the public.

  • Well to add a little realize to the actuality of the jobs of the DEA officers over comeing from the fact that I know because Doug Wankel is my Uncle. Its not like we can go over there and frickin burn down there oppium fields. First that would cause a war and second the UN would have our ass. there as it was and still is in columbia the DEAs job is to gather intellagience and aid in tranning the goverments police agentcies to better combat the drug problem. Not that its a perfect plane but?

  • not to mention that the Taliban had destroyed the opium crop, not until after the U.S. invasion did they begin growing again,The C.I.A. needs the money, simple as that.
